Unboxing and First Look at The Real Ghostbusters: A Visual History – Ghostbusters News

For those eagerly awaiting The Real Ghostbusters: A Visual History, the upcoming must-have release from Dark Horse Books, authors Troy Benjamin and Craig Goldberg have just dropped a video giving fans an early in-hand look, along with a few behind-the-scenes stories from the making of.

First, an important update for those who may have missed it: The Real Ghostbusters: A Visual History will now officially be released on July 8, 2025, with both the standard and deluxe editions launching simultaneously. Pre-orders are now live through major retailers, including Amazon. The deluxe edition, which we would argue is the version to grab, comes housed in a firehouse-inspired slipcase and includes a portfolio of two acetate animation cel replicas, plus a firehouse flagpole ribbon bookmark.

During the preview, both authors, lifelong Ghostbusters fans and respected figures within the community, shared how massive an undertaking the book became. From tracking down rare artwork, storyboards, and concept sketches to locating long-lost prototypes, much of the content was sourced from personal collections and private animator archives, with several pieces never seen publicly before. They also touched on memorable moments from the process, including recovering lost Kenner engineering schematics and conducting interviews with key creatives behind the show and toy line.

It is also clear that this will not be just a surface-level encyclopedia. The Real Ghostbusters: A Visual History aims to tell the full story behind the beloved animated series and toy line. Benjamin and Goldberg tease plenty of surprises, including early designs for unproduced toys, detailed notes from the original promo pilot, and deep dives into character changes across the show’s run, such as the look and voice of Janine Melnitz.

Troy Benjamin, known for The Ectomobile Owner’s Workshop Manual, running Ghostbusters HQ, and co-hosting The Ghostbusters Interdimensional Crossrip, praised the team at Dark Horse, calling them “true fans” who understood the responsibility of creating a definitive guide. Craig Goldberg, co-host of Yes Have Some and co-author of the book, credits the Ghostbusters fan community for their passion and support, which helped bring countless rare materials to light.

The Real Ghostbusters: A Visual History will span over 250 pages, and, as teased, there are revelations in the book that even hardcore Ghostbusters fans will be surprised by. This is one you’re not going to want to miss, so be sure to trap your pre-order today (PRE-ORDER STANDARD | PRE-ORDER DELUXE).
