Both Epic Games and Disney offered statements about the partnership and the brand-new way of debuting new episodes in Fortnite’s in-game world, gushing about the possibilities of the creative union.
“For the first time, Disney+ is premiering a show inside a game, launching alongside our largest Star Wars collaboration with Fortnite to date – giving fans and players an exciting first look at the kinds of experiences they can expect as we shape a new future together,” Sean Shoptaw, executive vp of Disney Games & Digital Entertainment, said.
“We’re building the next era of digital entertainment, where fans can play, watch, create and connect – and we’re just beginning to tap into what’s possible.”
“Disney and Epic are pioneering the future of social entertainment together, and this expansive Star Wars collaboration offers a glimpse into the type of interactive experiences we envision,” Epic Games president Adam Sussman shared with THR. “We are reimagining what’s possible with immersive storytelling in Fortnite with one of the world’s most beloved franchises – stay tuned for a lot more to come.”
Previous Jedi dealings
Disney and Epic Games have grown to have a fruitful partnership. The House of Mouse previously invested $1.5 billion into Epic Games to establish a “games and entertainment universe that brings Disney characters from franchises like Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and Avatar together.”
The multi-year deal was first reported in February 2024 was described by Bob Iger as “a huge Disney universe that will be for gaming and for play, and for watching and even for shopping for digital goods, and maybe ultimately physical goods that will live alongside Fortnite, but be completely interconnected with Fortnite.”
So, we may be seeing a product of that vision.
