Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most highly anticipated video game releases of all time. With a confirmed Fall 2025 launch window, the industry is bracing for the game’s arrival, as publishers and developers carefully plan their own schedules around it. New data suggests that the sheer cultural impact of GTA could make it difficult for any competing release to gain traction.
As a result, Fall 2025 is shaping up to be a potential wasteland for major game launches, with publishers seemingly unwilling to go head-to-head with Rockstar’s juggernaut title. Although initial news of this broke around Holiday 2024, info has become less scarce, and a few CEO and publisher heads are finally speaking out.
Grand Theft Auto 6
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI takes fans back to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City. Probably the most anticipated game of all time, GTA VI will unfold the story of Lucia and Jason as they rampage around the city on a crime spree that is set to enthrall fans all over again.
Major Game Releases Scramble to Avoid GTA6 Launch
Every publisher is afraid to set a release date around GTA6, and rightly so
According to The Game Business, there are three major video game publishers, including EA, that are ready to delay their games to avoid the initial three-week blast zone that is Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date. One of the heads of the world’s biggest gaming publishers stated,
“Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market […] We don’t want to be anywhere near that. We are working up multiple different plans for our titles.”
EA boss Andrew Wilson echoed these sentiments previously, stating the next Battlefield

may be pushed because “some things happening in the year that may cause us to think differently about our launch timing.” In December 2024, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that publishers are hesitant to commit to Fall 2025 release dates, partly due to Rockstar Games’ tentative launch window. “Anticipation is so high that some competing game publishers are waiting as long as possible to commit to their release dates for the fall, according to people familiar with their deliberations who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly. The publishers want to see whether GTA 6 will make its deadline or slip into 2026, these people say, and they’re determined to keep their own games far, far away,” according to the report.

GTA V Holds the Record for the Biggest Entertainment Launch in History
Grand Theft Auto is a selling juggernaut with a track record to prove it
Although player behavior has changed since GTA V’s initial release 11 years ago, the groundswell for the game’s release permeates every comment section, forum, or trending topic on the internet. Throughout the years, dating back to Grand Theft Auto 4, the subsequent release for each new title has been more hype than the last, with the upcoming title having the most hype of them all. Fans were so fervent for new information that on September 18, 2022, a well-known hacker, “teapotuberhacker” was charged with an indefinite hospital order for leaking work-in-progress gameplay.
FIFA 14 was also released during this window, but was outsold due to GTA V’s dominance and EA’s annual release schedule for all FIFA games.
Veteran analyst Matthew Ball of Epyllion released a 219-page report on the “State of Video Gaming in 2025,” exploring industry growth opportunities. In a section on player engagement and spending, he suggests GTA 6 could launch at $80 or even $100, breaking a key price barrier. Ball noted that some in the market hope Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, will set this precedent, potentially paving the way for higher game prices industry-wide. Previously, a Baldur’s Gate 3 developer speculated that GTA 6 could push the industry toward more expensive games if priced above $70. Although it’s unclear how fans would react to the move, it would be a steep hill for any developer who doesn’t take as much time to polish and fine-tune their products as Rockstar does.

GTA 6 Will Command Headlines Across All News Sectors
Leaving little to no room for live-service games to thrive, let alone single-player titles

Publishers have good reason to be afraid of Rockstar Games’ monumental release, as its previous installment in the GTA series, 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V, made up half of all game revenue made during its September release in the United States. In the UK, GTA 5 dominated the market during its launch week, making up 89% of all game sales and generating 94% of total revenue, according to Nielsen/GfK data. This trend continued for the first three weeks after release.
While it’s speculated that GTA 6 will launch as a single-player experience before introducing its multiplayer mode, this claim has no certainty. Regardless, even other live-service games won’t be able to compete with GTA 6 at launch, whether it includes multiplayer from the start or not. The game’s release will dominate both mainstream media and gaming outlets in the weeks leading up to and following its debut. GTA is a franchise that appeals to a broad spectrum of players—from casual mobile gamers to sports and FPS fans, meaning even devoted followers of other major franchises may shift their focus to GTA 6 over their usual favorites.

If Rockstar Games Pushes GTA 6 Back–It’ll Be Worse In 2026
2026 may be as empty as Fall 2025 if GTA6 is delayed
Although Rockstar Games’ Take-Two has reassured investors that GTA 6 remains on schedule, the developer has a track record of delays, stemming back as far as GTA 4 and as recent as GTA 5’s next-gen updates. GTA 4 was initially set for an October 2007 release but was delayed until April 2008. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was pushed from January 2009 to April 2009, alongside GTA 4‘s DLC. Red Dead Redemption was originally scheduled for late April 2010 but was postponed to May. Grand Theft Auto V was slated for Spring 2013 before being delayed to September of that year. Finally, Red Dead Redemption II was expected to be one of 2017’s biggest releases, but Rockstar and Take-Two pushed it to Spring 2018, and then again to Fall 2018.
If GTA 6 were to be delayed, it’s uncertain whether previously postponed games would reclaim their original release dates. This could leave the Fall 2025 window largely empty, aside from any live-service games that might seize the opportunity. Alternatively, history could repeat itself in 2026, with publishers hesitant to schedule releases if Rockstar announces another vague launch window instead of a firm date.
Such a delay could also fuel toxicity within the fan base, leading to backlash against the development team, while disappointing Rockstar’s parent company and investors. While the exact release date remains unknown, all indications still point to Fall 2025—a timeframe publishers are likely to continue treating as a no-man’s-land.
