MediaTek Kompanio Ultra Brings Next-Gen AI to Chromebook Plus Devices

MediaTek has unveiled its most powerful Chromebook processor yet, the Kompanio Ultra, which promises to transform the Chromebook Plus experience with advanced on-device AI capabilities and exceptional performance. Announced from the company’s headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan on April 2, 2025, this new flagship processor represents a significant leap forward in Chromebook technology.

The Kompanio Ultra processor packs impressive AI processing power with 50 TOPS (trillion operations per second), enabling sophisticated on-device generative AI experiences. At the heart of these capabilities is MediaTek’s 8th-generation NPU, which supports real-time task automation, personalized computing experiences, and AI-enhanced workflows—all processed locally for improved speed, security, and efficiency, even when offline.

Built on advanced 3nm process technology, the processor features an all-big-core CPU architecture headlined by an Arm Cortex-X925 processor running at speeds up to 3.62GHz. This configuration delivers exceptional single and multi-threaded performance, making it capable of handling demanding applications like video editing, content creation, and high-resolution gaming without lag or slowdown.

The partnership between MediaTek and Google continues to strengthen with this new processor. John Solomon, VP and GM of ChromeOS and Google for Education at Google, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We’re excited for the next step in our MediaTek partnership. Despite its powerful performance, the Kompanio Ultra maintains impressive energy efficiency. MediaTek’s advanced power management technologies and large on-chip caches optimize power usage, ensuring all-day battery life without compromising on performance capabilities.

For productivity and entertainment, the processor supports multi-display configurations with up to two external 4K displays. It also features advanced Hi-Fi audio processing for crystal-clear calls and immersive sound experiences. Connectivity is handled by Wi-Fi 7 support, providing ultra-fast, low-latency connections with superior range and reliability.
