This tiny Linux computer, complete with screen, is smaller than a passport photo, and I'm in love with it

Summary

  • Miniature Linux computer smaller than a US passport photo with its own screen.
  • Impressive features packed into a tiny device, including ARM Mali-400 MP2 GPU.
  • Features include motion sensor, microphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more. Audio quality unknown.

How small is too small for a computer? Trick question; there’s never “too small.” In fact, the smaller the better, especially if the computer comes with its own screen. So, when I heard that someone made a Linux computer that’s smaller than a US passport photo, I had to check it out. This amazing device really pushes the limit as to how small a computer can get, and yes, it even has its own built-in screen that’s surprisingly readable.

Arch is my new go-to Linux distro, and here are some things I wish I knew about it sooner.

This miniature Linux computer is the cutest device you’ll see today

As spotted by Hackster, this amazing little computer comes to us via Coding Scientist on YouTube. It’s only 40mm x 35mm in size, which makes it smaller than the 51mm x 51mm size that a US passport photo has to be. They claim it’s the “world’s smallest tiny development board,” and while there isn’t much proof to back that claim up, I am hoping there is one smaller out there somewhere. The teeny-tiny screen on the board shows that it’s running Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS.

The most impressive part of this build isn’t just the size; it’s how much stuff this thing has on it at its size. You’d expect such a board to have the bare minimum to get a computer running, but as listed in the YouTube description, this thing packs a stunning number of features:

I’m building powerful, real-time AI, Robotics, and IoT systems using this ultra-compact Linux development board powered by the ARM Mali-400 MP2 GPU, and it’s a total game-changer! This thumb size computer runs Linux from a micro SD card. Built-in MPU6050 motion sensor (accelerometer + gyroscope). Microphone for voice + sound applications. IPS display for real-time feedback. Wi-Fi & Bluetooth onboard. Expand with SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO. 4 physical buttons for boot, reset, recovery, and custom input.

Yes, that’s right, this thing has a microphone on it. I’d love to hear what the audio quality is like on it, and I’d be really impressed if you could realistically call a friend on this thing.
