Best RTX 4090 laptops in 2024

Buying a high-end laptop with a Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card inside generally means that you’re aiming for the best performance possible for gaming or for other intensive tasks like 3D rendering. Nvidia’s RTX 4090 Laptop GPU won’t match the performance of its desktop counterpart due to heat and power constraints, but it will still offer the best mobile power around. If you’re interested in taking your gaming PC everywhere and don’t want to lag far behind a desktop setup, one of these laptops should be the way to go. I’ve been sure to specify the RTX 4090’s TGP specific to each model to ensure you’re not getting a card that’s held back by power constraints.

Our favorite laptops with Nvidia’s RTX 4090 GPU

Editor’s Choice

Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9

The right mix for most people

$2699 $3299 Save $600

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is our favorite overall gaming laptop, and it happens to be available with up to an RTX 4090 laptop GPU running at a 175W TGP. It also has a 14th Gen Intel Core i9-14900HX CPU, a 16-inch QHD+ display, and up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM out of the box.

Pros

  • High-end performance that doesn’t overheat
  • Premium design and build quality
  • Many display and config options
Cons

  • Relatively heavy
  • No 4K display option

When it comes to the overall best gaming laptops available today, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 remains our top pick with the 2024 model. It’s not absolutely perfect, but it’s easy to look past the so-so battery life (it is a gaming laptop after all) and lack of 4K display option when confronted with all the great features. The build quality is outstanding, and the design is fairly subdued with just the right amount of flair. It has a load of ports along the back for easy cable management, there’s a 1080p webcam, the speakers offer quality sound, and there’s plenty of customizable RGB lighting.

The 14th-gen Intel Core i9-14900HX processor (CPU) has the power to rival a desktop setup, and it’s joined by up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM and 2TB of M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage split between two drives. Opting for an RTX 4090 laptop GPU brings the price up to well over $3,000, but that’s got to be expected if you’re aiming for this kind of performance. It has a whopping 175W of power, too, the maximum allowed by Nvidia’s design.

Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 review: An already-great laptop gets a spec bump and display upgrade

With a chip upgrade, an optional Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU, and a more color-accurate display, one of our favorite gaming laptops just got better.

Our main issue with last year’s model of the Legion Pro 7i was the display, but for the 2024 edition, Lenovo fixed it and gave us a fantastic screen that covers 99% of DCI-P3, in addition to having Quad HD resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. In the words of our reviewer, Brady Snyder, “this subtle display upgrade makes the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 an even more well-rounded gaming laptop”, and so, it’s easier than ever to recommend to just about anyone.

Premium Pick

Razer Blade 18 (2024)

Razer’s desktop replacement

The Blade 18 is the biggest and most powerful gaming laptop from Razer. It’s incredibly expensive, but it represents the pinnacle of modern laptop design. It’s packed with high-end features, including a 14th Gen Intel Core i9, an RTX 4090 with 175W of power, and a Quad HD+ Mini-LED display with a 300Hz refresh rate.

Pros

  • The sleekest 18-inch powerhouse around
  • Top-tier 14th-gen Intel Core i9 and RTX 4090
  • Stunning Mini-LED 18-inch QHD+ display at 300Hz
Cons

  • No 4K display option
  • Extremely expensive

The 2024 Razer Blade 18 is once again one of the absolute best gaming laptops money can buy. Despite the dimensions — the laptop measures just 0.86 inches (21.9mm) thin — Razer allows the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 to run at up to a 175W TGP for maximum mobile performance. That RTX 4090 is paired with a top-of-the-line Intel Core i9-14900HX processor, along with uip to 64GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD storage.

The Razer Blade 18 is the world’s first laptop with Thunderbolt 5 and a 4K 200Hz display

Razer has finally launched the Blade 18, and it’s looking like the ultimate machine — with a price tag to match.

The 18-inch display got a big upgrade for the 2024 refresh, too. You now get a Mini-LED panel with a super-smooth 300Hz refresh rate, while keeping the same Quad HD+ resolution. That effectively makes this one of the best laptop display around for gaming. Alternatively, you can get a 4K 200Hz panel, which is mind-blowing in its own way, since it’s also unheard of on a laptop. That display sits below a 5MP webcam that’s basically unheard of in a gaming laptop, complete with Windows Hello support.

Razer really pulled out all the stops, even making this the first-ever laptop to support Thunderbolt 5, so you’re very future-proof, too. Per-key RGB lighting for the keyboard is customizable, the touchpad is huge, there are lots of ports, and the black finish can fit in pretty much anywhere. The biggest issue with these laptops is the price. A model with the RTX 4090 GPU will cost you at least $4,500 unless you can find it on sale. But you’re getting a lot for that money.

Mini-LED display

Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 (2024)

16-inch Nebula QHD display

Craving the majesty of a mini-LED display? The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 brings a gorgeous 240Hz Nebula HDR screen with 240Hz refresh rate and 1,100 nits brightness with over 2,000 local dimming zones. This model features an Intel Core i9-14900HX CPU and RTX 4090 laptop GPU for ultimate power.

Pros

  • Mini-LED display is incredible
  • Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU and RTX 4090 GPU running at 175W
  • Modern design, lots of RGB lighting

Some of the best laptops with mini-LED display are designed for high-end PC gaming, and that’s exactly where the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 falls into place. The focus here really should be on the 16-inch Nebula HDR mini-LED display. It has a 2560×1600 (QHD+) resolution to match the 16:10 aspect ratio, it hits 100% DCI-P3 color, it has a sizzling 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time, and it has G-Sync baked right in. The mini-LED tech allows for 2,000 local dimming zones (nearly four times the prvious model) for outstanding color and contrast, with 1,100 nits brightness at peak and VESA DisplayHDR 1000/Dolby Vision HDR compatibility.

It will be tough to go back to a regular display after using mini-LED, but the laptop should last for years thanks to its incredible performance. It packs in a 14th-gen Intel Core i9-14900HX CPU and a Nvidia RTX 4090 laptop GPU running at 175W. Considering it also has 32GB of DDR5 RAM and 2TB of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD storage, the $3,500 price tag makes a lot of sense, and it just shows you’re paying for an incredible product.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 (2024) review: Big on both performance and price

A powerful machine that looks unique with its semi-transparent design.

Thunderbolt 4 and HDMI 2.1 are on board for modern connectivity, and you get per-key RGB lighting for the keyboard. Keys have a deep 2mm travel for extra comfort. A light bar along the front can also be synced up for extra RGB. There’s only a 720p camera here, but there is a quad-speaker setup with Dolby Atmos for quality audio. Overall, this laptop should prove to be quite popular for those who value a great built-in display and RTX 4090 performance without overspending.

Best 18-inch

Alienware M18 R2 Gaming Laptop

Big screen, big performance

If you want a big screen, it’s hard to do much better than the Alienware m18 R2. This beastly 18-inch laptop packs top-tier Intel processors and up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. It also has a bvariety of display configurations for different tastes, and it looks great to boot.

Pros

  • Large 18-inch display with great colors and configuration options
  • Full-power RTX 4090 with 175W of power
  • Plenty of ports and an optional mechanical keyboard
Cons

  • Quad HD+ display is limited to 165Hz

Gaming is much more immersive with a huge screen, and the closest you’re going to get on a laptop is 18 inches. And if you want the best 18-inch laptop around, the Alienware m18 R2 is for you. As you can expect, this is a beastly machine, featuring 14th-gen Intel processors up to a Core i9-14900HX, and up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 running at 175W, the maximum allowed by the GPU itself. You can also kit it out with up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and an 8TB of SSD storage.

There are a couple of major display options here, too, with either a Quad HD+ panel running at 165Hz or a super-smooth Full HD+ display that can go up to 480Hz if you value fluidity above all else. Both options cover 100% of DCI-P3, so colors look great either way.

Alienware m18 R2 review: A premium, beastly laptop for no-compromises gaming

Last year’s Alienware m18 was already good, but the m18 R2 and its 14th-gen HX processor and RTX 4090 graphics is excellent.

The real treat is the option for a CherryMX mechanical keyboard, which offers a fantastic feel unlike anything you can get on other laptops. If you’ve used one of these keyboards, you know just how satisfying they feel, and it’s simply fantastic. On top of the display you also get a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello support, which is always great to see.

Otherwise, the Alienware m18 R2 is a simply great-looking laptop. There’s a bit of RGB with the keyboard and the ring light on the back, making it flashy if you’re into that, and there are a lot of ports for all your peripherals. It’s simply a fantastic laptop if you want something big.

Liquid cooling

Lenovo Legion 9i (2024)

Maximum performance in a thin chassis

$3299 $4399 Save $1100

The Lenovo Legion 9i breaks all the conventions by packing a true liquid cooling loop into its 16-inch chassis, extracting top-notch performance from its 14th-gen Intel processor and RTX 4090 GPU. It also has a fantastic mini-LED display with Quad HD+ resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate.

Pros

  • Top-tier Intel Core i9 processor and RTX 4090 GPU
  • Liquid cooling loop maximizes performance in a more compact chassis
  • Unique design with plenty of RGB

When we reviewed the 2023 Lenovo Legion 9i, it was one of the best gaming laptops money could buy, if not the best. Lenovo has come back for round two with this model, upgrading the performance with the new Intel Core i9-14900HX, which is still paired with the incredibly powerful RTX 4090 GPU running at 175W. Lenovo also has a dedicated AI chip to help improve performance even more. What really seals the deal, though, is that this is the only 16-inch laptop to have a proper liquid cooling loop inside of it, which allows it to run cooler while being much thinner than comparable laptops.

Lenovo’s best gaming laptop is even better in 2024 thanks to its supercharged AI features that can boost the framerates in your games.

You also get an array of ports on the back, a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello support, and a nice touchpad, so this is the full package, even if it comes at a high cost.

Slim design

Alienware x16 R2

Sleek looks with lots of power

The Alienware x16 R2 has a standout style with plenty of RGB lighting and a thin design considering its powerful specs. Its Intel Core Ultra processors can be paired with an RTX 4090 laptop GPU running at 175W. Choose from 16-inch QHD+ displays with 165Hz or 240Hz refresh rate, and enjoy the optional CherryMX mechanical keyboard.

Pros

  • Sleek design with a ton of RGB, including an optional light-up touchpad
  • Killer 16-inch QHD+ display at 240Hz
  • Top-tier GPU performance despite the compact chassis
Cons

  • No 4K display option
  • Availability is more limited than some other models

Dell’s Alienware brand has always stood out to me thanks to its unique design cues and exceptional performance, and the Alienware x16 R2 is the best yet. The rounded back edge offers some exhaust venting and a port bank, surrounded by a customizable RGB lighting ring. A honeycomb grille lives between the keyboard and display, the black interior offsets the exterior quite nicely, and the touchpad can even light up with RGB. Dell has gone with a low-profile keyboard using CherryMX switches for that mechanical feel and performance. A 1080p webcam lives above the display for quality video streaming, and there’s even an IR sensor for Windows Hello.

The laptop measures just 0.73 inches (18.57mm) thin, making it one of the thinner RTX 4090 gaming laptops out there today. The GPU can still hit the maximum 175W TGP, though instead of using an HX-series processor, Dell adopted an Intel Core Ultra chip instead, so CPU performance isn’t as powerful as some other models (though on the flip side, it has some AI capabilities).

Alienware x16 R2 review: This gaming laptop is more powerful than ever — most of the time

This gaming laptop is still full of RGB and great aesthetics, but now includes Intel Core Ultra and other upgrades inside.

The 16-inch display comes with a 16:10 aspect ratio and Quad HD+ resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate, or a Full HD+ panel with a 480Hz refresh rate depending on what you want to prioritize. Both panels are pretty good, covering 100% of DCI-P3, and in the words of our reviewer Brady Snyder, “the Alienware x16 R2 can keep up with the most color-accurate gaming laptops out there”.

Aside from the essentials, you get plenty of ports for such a thin laptop, plus there’s a ton of RGB, with the keyboard, ring light on the back, and even an optional light-up touchpad that’s way more flashy than it needed to be. It’s really fun laptop to show off, on top of just being a great one.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024)

Best OLED laptop

Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024)

A stunning display in a sleek chassis

$3000 $3300 Save $300

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is an even sleeker option if you want a gaming machine that’s more portable but still powerful. It has an Intel Core 9 processor and up to an RTX 4090 GPU running at 115W. It’s also got a stunning OLED display that’s even better than mini-LED,

Pros

  • Stunning OLED display offers absolutely stunning visuals and HDR
  • Thin and relatively light design considering the specs
  • Great speaker setup and a large touchpad
Cons

  • GPU is less powerful than larger laptops
  • It can get pretty hot

Mini-LED displays are great, but if you want the best visual experience, OLED is the way to go, and Asus is happy to provide with the ROG Zephyrus G16. This 16-inch laptop packs a stunning OLED display with 500 nits of brightness in HDR mode, offering one of the best HDR experiences you can get. The individually-lit pixels are even better than mini-LED, whether you’re gaming, working, or watching movies.

It’s a pretty fast laptop, too. Due to the thin design, it comes with an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor rather than the more power-hungry HX-series chips, but it’s still plenty fast. You also get the option for an RTX 4090, though it’s limited to 115W of power. This is a consequence of the thinner design, and it’s important to note this is the lightest laptop on this list. You lose some performance, but you get some portability in return, so it’s all about picking your priorities.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024) review: Major redesign makes this laptop great for more than just gaming

The new ROG Zephyrus G16 is a premium laptop with mature design, appealing to anyone who wants to work and game on the same device.

Even with its smaller chassis, the ROG Zephyrus G16 has an excellent keyboard with plenty of travel, a large touchpad, and solid speakers that easily drown out fan noise. You also get a solid selection of ports, and on top of that, it’s all wrapped in a very sleek design that barely gives away this is a gaming laptop. This is a laptop you can use anywhere, and as a result, it can be great for almost anyone.

In our review, Cale Hunt said “The ROG Zephryus G16 (2024) is one of the best built laptops I’ve tested, with a high attention to detail evident everywhere you look”, and that’s not overselling it. This is a great choice.

Getting the best RTX 4090 laptop for you

Any of the laptops that I’ve listed above come with an option for the mighty Nvidia RTX 4090 laptop GPU, capable of delivering the best gaming performance possible before stepping into a desktop setup. Many of these laptops will in fact rival and even best some of the most popular pre-built gaming desktop PCs when it comes to raw power, and of course you get a built-in display and many other extra features that make your life with the laptop as easy as possible. None of these laptops are affordable, but that ‘s to be expected if you want an RTX 4090.

The back of the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i.

These are all great laptops, but our top pick has to go to the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9. It’s our favorite overall gaming laptop right now, and it just so happens to be configurable with up to a Nvidia RTX 4090 laptop GPU running at the full 175W potential. The build quality and design and outstanding, there are many configuration options, and the QHD display is a beauty (even if it doesn’t have the same pixel density as 4K).

Any of the other options has its own novelty, whether that’s mini-LED, liquid cooling, or a thinner and more portable design. There’s something for everyone here.
