But sometimes, when we peel back the layers of a video game villain’s motivations, we discover something unexpected. A sense of morality or even a vision for a better world. Their methods may be questionable, but their core beliefs might not be as evil as we originally thought.

Letho

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Letho, a mysterious assassin from The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, is set up as the primary antagonist of the game. At first glance, he seems like just any other cold-blooded killer, but his motives are far more layered than they first appear to be. Letho is actually part of a group of witchers, known as the School of the Viper, and his actions throughout the game are motivated by a desire to rebuild his school of witchers after the emperor of Nilfgaard had destroyed it.

The school of the viper was a witcher group that primarily focused on learning about the Wild Hunt, so that they might one day defeat them. Apart from this, they are also well known for being witchers that do not only hunt monsters. Meaning, human and non-human assassination contracts were on the table. After the remaining witchers from the school of the viper were captured by Nilfgaardian soldiers, their leader, Letho, was brought before the emperor and offered a deal.

Kill the kings of the north, and the emperor will help rebuild the school of the viper, or decline and be executed along with the rest of the witchers from his school. While Letho did assassinate two of the kings, he was forced to do it to keep his witcher school alive. In the end, Letho wasn’t just a cold-blooded killer, he was just a witcher that was being extorted by the emperor (who would later go back on his word). This doesn’t seem so evil when considering just how many humans Geralt has killed for his causes.

King Logan

Fable III

In the Xbox exclusive Fable III, players are tasked with confronting King Logan, the protagonist’s older brother, who rules Albion with an iron fist. Initially, Logan appears to be a cruel tyrant, willing to sacrifice his people for power. However, his ruthless methods have a deeper, more tragic reason behind them. Logan is aware of an invading enemy called The Crawler, which threatens to annihilate the entire kingdom. Believing that only through strict control can he save Albion, Logan implements harsh policies, including cutting education and extending work hours, to strengthen the nation in the face of this unknown enemy.

While these measures make Logan appear heartless, his choices were made to protect his people, even at great personal and moral cost. The kingdom, already in financial ruin by the time the player ascends to the throne, requires tough decisions regarding resources, taxes, and military defense to stand any chance against the coming threat. Despite the justification for his actions, Logan’s cruelty ultimately alienates the people and fails to create lasting change.

Though it’s impossible to overlook his tyrannical rule, Logan’s motivations reveal a complex, morally ambiguous character. His desperate measures reflect a belief that the ends justify the means. This internal conflict makes Logan both a tragic figure and a symbol of the difficult choices that leaders must face in times of crisis.

Fable III

In Fable III, you will be called upon to rally and fight alongside your people, ascend to the seat of power, and experience the true meaning of love and loss. The choices and sacrifices you make while fanning the flames of revolution, and then as you rule as King or Queen or Albion, will lead to an ever evolving world of consequences that will be felt across your entire land.

Pagan Min

Far Cry 4

Pagan Min, the flamboyant dictator in the FPS game Far Cry 4, initially appears to be a cruel, power-hungry tyrant. However, as the story unfolds, it’s revealed that his leadership is driven by wanting to restore Kyrat to greatness. Pagan Min believes his authoritarian rule is necessary to unite and elevate the fractured nation, and he sees himself as the key to Kyrat’s future success.

The Golden Path, the main resistance movement in Kyrat, is divided into two factions with differing visions for the country’s future. Sabal, a traditionalist, wants to preserve Kyrat’s culture and religion, even if it requires violence and sacrifice. In contrast, Amita is focused on modernizing Kyrat, willing to exploit its resources to achieve her goals.

Supporting Sabal leads Kyrat toward a traditional future, with more violence and a return to religious power. On the other hand, backing Amita pushes Kyrat into a modernized but more exploited state. Both paths result in the death of Pagan Min, but they leave the nation fractured and divided.

However, there’s a third option. If you choose to wait at Pagan Min’s palace at the beginning, the game fast-forwards, and Pagan Min’s forces wipe out the Golden Path. He then rules Kyrat, bringing a tense but peaceful resolution, suggesting that his authoritarian rule might have been the most effective, albeit morally ambiguous, solution.

This catastrophe has transformed much of humanity into dangerous, zombie-like creatures. The game follows Joel and Ellie as they embark on a perilous journey through this broken world. Along the way, they encounter the Fireflies, a group determined to use Ellie’s rare immunity to the infection to create a cure. However, their plans come with a heart-wrenching cost.

The Fireflies’ doctors inform Joel that Ellie’s immunity can only be studied by extracting the virus from her brain, a procedure that will inevitably kill her. Stricken by the thought of losing Ellie, whom he has grown to love as a daughter, Joel makes a drastic choice. He fights his way through the Firefly compound, killing many, including the lead surgeon, to rescue Ellie and save her from the deadly operation.

Although the Fireflies’ intentions were noble, aiming to cure humanity, their willingness to sacrifice Ellie reveals the moral complexity of their mission. Their actions were driven by desperation, believing that saving the world justified any means. While it’s hard to fault Joel’s decision to choose to save the girl who became his family. But at the end of the day, his actions doomed the rest of the world to live without a cure, which would lead to the death of many more innocent humans.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a 2013 game set in post-apocalyptic America. Players will take up the role of Joel, a smuggler, as he attempts to help a teenage girl named Ellie across the country.
