You likely never thought about these 5 weird and wonderful ways to use Obsidian

Obsidian is one of the best note-taking apps available, allowing you to jot down important notes, build out knowledge, and even manage projects. It’s an incredibly powerful and versatile platform with numerous community-made plugins available. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of plugins and use Obsidian for a few notes here and there, but did you know there are some truly creative ways to use this piece of kit?

Start and host a wiki

Catalog everything!

A wiki is a platform of information designed for collaboration. Did you know you could effectively use Obsidian as the foundation for an interactive wiki? Even the base install has nearly everything you’d need, including the ability to interlink pages, format content accordingly, add images, create templates for infoboxes, and other elements frequently spotted on wiki websites.

Providing others access to a hosted vault can open up a realm of possibilities through collaboration. Although Obsidian at its heart isn’t designed with multiple users editing the same vault, it’s possible and makes it a powerful tool for planning out or even running a feature wiki.

Start a D&D playthrough

Characters, world-building, and rules

PhD20 Obsidian Wiki

Dungeons & Dragons or some other tabletop game requires extensive materials to run an immersive story. With its robust linking system for external and internal resources, Obsidian can be primed for handling everything relating to a D&D playthrough. From character sheets to world-building, asset values to dice-rolling, Obsidian can (almost) do it all. There’s a fantastic resource dedicated to achieving this, and while it does take a considerable amount of work, it’s well worth the effort.

One of the great things about Obsidian is how versatile the app is through plugins. You can opt to use one, two, or all required for a feature-rich D&D experience. It’s such a unique way of using Obsidian and really thinks outside the box to create dashboards, automation, and other handy tools to get the job done and bring a world to life. I’ve used the Obsidian TTRPG tutorial website to craft my own D&D vault, and it still to this day blows my mind what you can use Obsidian for.

I finally started using Obsidian, and I should have sooner

Obsidian is often touted as the best note-taking app out there, and I can finally see why.

Plan your wedding

Get all the details down

Your wedding is among the most stressful days to plan for. Everything needs to be thought through and go according to plan on the day; otherwise, there’s hell to pay. That’s where a good process for getting everything down and considered plays a vital role. It was the case with my own wedding, where spreadsheets, multiple documents, countless email chains, and more were all in the works. It was frantic, which is where Obsidian came to the rescue.

Obsidian’s graph view is perfect for arranging seats and visualizing how everything comes together. It’s also good for taking notes and connecting all the dots, making it easier to parse through and not miss a minute detail. Should you and your fiancé find yourselves struggling to cope with the overwhelming barrage of information that comes with planning a wedding, try inputting everything into an Obsidian vault. Invites, seating, budgets, and more.

Blog about anything

For your eyes only, or share with others

Sometimes you just have to note down your thoughts, which is where an app like Obsidian really shines, but this incredibly versatile tool can be much more. You can use Obsidian to create a blog, much like you would WordPress. Instead of handling pesky hosting and other bits that go into running a fully-fledged website, Obsidian would allow you to create, format, and save blog posts on just about anything that comes to mind. Working on your home lab and wish to document some cool things you’re deploying? Go right ahead!

You don’t need to do much to Obsidian to get it configured for blogging either. Obsidian can then be used to push the content elsewhere, if desired. And should you eventually make it big and launch a website in its place, Obsidian can handle the backend of ideation, planning, and notes for future pieces with a wealth of knowledge already documented to tap into.

Here’s how I use Obsidian as a digital journal

From notes to narratives: craft your personal journal in Obsidian

Build a smart address book

Photo import? Check. Lists? More than possible! Links? Absolutely. Obsidian can be used to create an interactive and smart address book, detailing everything you know about each individual. This could range from hard data such as birth dates to interests and even linking family and friends, creating your own social groups. Not only does this help me keep tabs on everyone (and their anniversaries), but it’s also a great way to bring together people with similar interests to create new groups.

6 Obsidian features and plugins I regret not using earlier

Obsidian features I should’ve mastered sooner

You don’t need to use community-made plugins to get the most out of Obsidian. For a few of our wacky ideas, it’s possible to use the base install of the app, making these much more accessible to even those who wish to keep things vanilla. So long as you don’t mind getting a little creative, you can do almost anything with a blank canvas and some ideation. That said, I do recommend trying out at least a few Obsidian plugins.

Some of these can prove invaluable, such as LiveSync, which can help you configure Obsidian to synchronize with a self-hosted database, effectively unlocking cross-device syncing. You could use a NAS or network folder to store vaults, but this is a much cooler (and more convenient) way to not only share the same data on all your hardware but also back up your Obsidian notes and projects.
