Until Dawn creators provide heartbreaking update on rumored Blade Runner game

Did you know that a Blade Runner game was going to be released soon? Yeah, well, it was, but that was before it got canceled. Supermassive Games were reportedly developing the game called Blade Runner: Time To Live. However, development hit a snag, and the title met its untimely demise.

According to Insider Gaming, the game was reportedly canned after Alcon Entertainment, Blade Runner’s rights owner, stepped in and stopped the game’s development for unnamed reasons, but it was canceled in late 2024. Insider Gaming obtained details surrounding a roadmap for the once-forthcoming, and the full breakdown can be found below.

These unforgettable opening missions set the tone perfectly for the incredible journeys that followed.

What was Blade Runner: Time To Live even about?

According to reports from Insider Gaming, the IP-driven experience from Supermassive Games was a “character-focused, cinematic, action-adventure.” Players would play as the lone surviving Blade Runner set in the year 2065 in a 10-12 hour single-player campaign.

The story was set to be based on an original idea with a “compelling story blending the philosophical themes of Blade Runner with kinetic action-adventure gameplay.” You would play as So-Lange, described as a vintage model Nexus-6 being “inexplicably still alive well beyond your limited lifespan.”

Unlike other Supermassive Games, Blade Runner would feature some form of true combat. Along with combat, the game would be built on three other gameplay elements: investigation/exploration, dramatic character interaction, and stealth. Building on this foundation, Supermassive Games promised to include “authentic, punchy, and poignant dialogue within its cast.”

“Journey from the teeming undercity of New Zurich 2065 to the eerie remnants of the forgotten world beyond,” a document description read. “Under orders to retire Rev, the mysterious and ruthless leader of an underground replicant network, you are betrayed and left for dead in a brutally hostile environment.”

Supermassive Games began pre-production on Blade Runner: Time To Live in September 2024, with the team working on it comprised mainly of the squad that worked on The Quarry. As per the outlet, pre-production was set to end around this year in March, with prototyping ending in September 2025, followed by a scheduled release in September 2027. Blade Runner: Time To Live‘s scheduled release saw the game coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and then eventually “Gen 10” consoles from both Sony and Microsoft.

Blade Runner: Time To Live had a budget of $45 million. $9 million of the budget was set to be used on talent and acting for the game. However, reports did explicitly state that the budget for the game’s image rights, performers, game testing, possible DLC, and other potential expenses weren’t accounted for.

It’ll be interesting to find out whether this game could be resumed with another developer or if Alcon Entertainment and Supermassive Games could get back on the same page. Because based on the work that Supermassive has previously done, this project could have been something special.
