Artificial Intelligence has long been regarded as a potential replacement for humans in various fields. But who would have thought that even a doctor’s job could be at risk with AI’s arrival. Can you imagine a Robot dentist performing a root canal? Yet, this became a reality when an AI-powered robot dentist successfully operated on human teeth in under 15 minutes.
According to a report by The Daily Mail, the robot dentist developed by a US-based company Perspective, performed the crown replacement on a human successfully in under 15 minutes, which is eight times quicker than a professional human dentist.
How was the unique procedure performed?
The unique procedure, which was happening for the first time, required the mapping of the patient’s mouth, which was performed using a 3D scanner. After which the AI-powered robot performed the whole procedure on its own. The result turned out as expected when the whole concept was planned.
CEO and founder of Perceptive, Dr Chris Ciriello, stated, “This medical breakthrough enhances precision and efficiency of dental procedures, and democratises access to better dental care, for improved patient experience and clinical outcomes.”
What is Crown replacement?
As per the web, “A crown replacement involves removing an old or damaged dental crown and replacing it with a new one. Crowns are caps placed over teeth to restore their shape, size, strength, and appearance.” The Procedure is done when the crown of teeth is damaged, decayed or worn out.
This procedure generally requires a two-day sitting with the dentist involving the operation of the teeth that lasts for an hour or two to remove the worn-out crown of the teeth and replace it with an artificial cap. However, this time-consuming procedure was done in just 15 minutes by the robot.
However, the entire procedure can not be fully credited to the robot, as a 3D model of the mouth is required before the crown replacement, which is carried out by a human practitioner. The 3D model is generated using a handheld scanner.
Karim Zaklama, a member of the Perspective clinical advisory board, stated “Perceptive’s AI-driven robotic system will transform dentistry. The patient experience will be better because of streamlining procedures and enhancing patient comfort.”
Dr Edward Zuckerberg, the Father of the Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, also funded the company with other major investors who contributed $30 million (£23m) in funding for the company to develop the technology.
