This Back to the Future-themed cyberdeck lives in a metal lunchbox, and yes, it has a flux capacitor

Summary

  • This Back to the Future-themed cyberdeck made from a lunchbox is a unique and cool DIY project.
  • The cyberdeck integrates movie props like a flux capacitor, all powered by a Raspberry Pi 5.
  • All components are cleverly held in place by neodymium magnets, allowing for easy access and transport.

I think a huge part of what makes a cyberdeck cool is what it’s enclosed in. I mean, in theory, you could put a cyberdeck in any container with a hinge on it, but for some reason, I give additional points to any build that puts them in something really cool and special. Well, I don’t think anything can get cooler than a metal Back to the Future lunchbox, so the fact that someone turned it into a fully-themed cyberdeck that looks like it came out of the movie itself is just icing on the cake.

A Back to the Future-themed cyberdeck is something I didn’t know I wanted, but now do

In a post on the Raspberry Pi subreddit, user valvechild uploaded a gallery of their amazing Back to the Future cyberdeck. If you’ve never heard of a “cyberdeck” before, it’s kind of like a DIY laptop, except it becomes its own carry case when it’s closed up. You’ll usually find cyberdecks living within suitcases and protective cases suited for transport.

According to valvechild, this particular cyberdeck idea came to be after their kids gave them a metal Back to the Future lunchbox for Christmas. So, as any avid tinkerer is apt to do, they got to work converting it into a full portable computer themed around the movie, with all of it running off a Raspberry Pi 5.

To show off more of their project, valvechild directs interested people (i.e., me) toward another thread they created. This one shows off a video of the build and goes into more detail about how the project came to be. The best part is how valvechild found a way to turn all of the referential movie props into actual working hardware for the cyberdeck, alongside some really smart design decisions:

The flux capacitor houses all the power supply bits, there is a voltage and ammeter to monitor the battery use (kinda reminds me of the time circuits too!) and an OLED that displays the temp, cpu load, RAM use, disk use and IP address of the RPI.

The little Bluetooth boom box provides the audio for the system and also adds a little more 80’s flair.

I went for the larger fold out keyboard as I didn’t want a cramped typing experience for programming but needed it to fold away into the lunchbox for transport.

Everything is held in place with neodymium magnets. Which means I can just lift it out whenever needed and an adjustable hinge was added to hold the screen in place when in use.

Truly amazing stuff. If you want more projects like this one, check out this sleek wooden cyberdeck and this portable arcade for gaming on the go.
