Running home servers can prove challenging, particularly if it’s your first deployment. Self-hosting apps is a great way to save money and gain complete control of all your data, but it can have a rather steep learning curve when starting fresh. That’s where a handy tool such as Tipi can make a difference. Based on the same Docker container tech that allows for many different apps to be conveniently installed on network-attached storage (NAS) and other operating systems, Tipi makes it even easier to install and manage apps.
What is Tipi, and why should you use it?
The greatest thing since sliced bread
Have you ever downloaded and run Ninite for Windows? Tipi is essentially Ninite but for NAS and home servers. Instead of installing, updating, and managing various Windows applications, Tipi does the same with Docker containers. Using these containers through Docker managers is simple enough, but they can sometimes require further configuration depending on how you install each app. This can put some beginners off without reading documentation or following a guide. Tipi helps alleviate all this with a simple interface.

Ninite can make it easier to install multiple programs on your PC – here’s how
With Ninite.com, there is no need to download multiple installers. Just select the programs you want and get one installer for them all.
Tipi is all about getting a many people into the self-hosted world as possible by offering a one-click install for many great open-source applications. Jellyfin and Immich are my go-to apps for hosting and streaming media and backing up photos, respectively. Both can be installed through Docker but require slight tinkering to set up folders for storing all your data. Tipi handles all this automatically without you having to dive into the file system to see what path should be specified and which folders will be required.
Think of Tipi like an app store for Docker, allowing you to quickly install as many as required on the same machine, each with a different port for easy remote access. If you’re not into learning how Docker containers work, how to effectively deploy them, and how to go about updating everything, Tipi can be a great means to save money in the short term through cancelling service subscriptions and self-hosting a few apps before spending time learning more about how it all comes together.
How to install and set up Tipi
Get up and running in no time
Getting started with Tipi is incredibly easy. All that is required is a single command through the command line interface (CLI). Most Linux distros (and other platforms) should work, though I’d recommend something like Ubuntu if you’re starting with your very first home server.
- Open the CLI.
-
Install Tipi.
curl -L https://setup.runtipi.io | bash
Should Docker be already installed on your system, Tipi will simply utilize the existing setup for the dashboard, else Docker will be installed alongside this handy little composer. With Tipi now installed, all you need to do is launch Tipi by opening up your favorite browser and loading tipi.local. You should now be greeted by the dashboard. If not, check the documentation to see if you went wrong somewhere.
How Tipi helps to deploy and manage apps
Everything from 2FAuth to Zipline
Installing and managing Docker containers is pretty straightofrward for many who are already experienced enough with how Linux and other paltforms work, but it can still be daungthing to newcomers, which is where Tipi makes all the difference. This easy-to-follow web-based dashboard is a great interface for anyone to install any app of their choosing from the Tipi App Store. More than 260 apps are already supported by Tipi, including many of the giants such as Immich, Jellyfin, and Plex.
Updating Tipi is just as easy with the following command:
sudo ./runtipi-cli update latest
Don’t see an app in the Tipi repository? Request it and see the team work on adding support for all your favorite Docker containers. Launching your own home servers has never been this convenient, especially if you’re new to the game. We’ve extensively covered self-hosting here at XDA and believe it to be a great way to save money (and your data privacy) and learn something new in the process. Tipi is yet another fantastic tool for the tech arsenal to achieve this goal.
