5 reasons you should use ShareX instead of Snipping Tool

ShareX is one of those rare apps that packs in tons of features and functionality for free, without ads. It’s perfect for those who are looking for a more advanced alternative to the Windows Snipping Tool. But what exactly can you accomplish with it?

From its extremely customizable settings to the many features and sharing options the tool provides, there are quite a few reasons why you might want to consider using it over Windows Snipping Tool.

7 alternatives to built-in Windows tools that will blow you away

You don’t need to rely on built-in Windows apps; here are alternatives that will do a far better job.

ShareX is extremely customizable

This includes automating certain actions

While the Windows Snipping tool has improved with Windows 11, there’s still a lot you can’t do with the app. But with ShareX, the level of customization allows you to make your workflow as simple or as complicated as you want. Everything from the file name it chooses for screenshots to what happens after you capture a screenshot can be customized.

The app also offers this level of customization to its own theme. Rather than selecting from a set of defaults, you can change elements such as the link and text color using a color picker. You can even adjust the font the app uses.

Then there’s the automation of certain tasks. You can choose where you want screenshots and recordings to upload to after capturing — for example, to a website like Imgur or a cloud service like OneDrive. I tweaked the actions it took after I captured a screenshot based on my own workflow. I could select these After capture tasks to ensure that the app copied the image to my clipboard while saving it in a specified folder. But you can also set it to automatically beautify images, recognize text, and more.

5 ways to take a screenshot on Windows

If you use a Windows PC and are wondering how to take a screenshot, here are multiple ways to capture your screen and edit it as well.

4

It has a built-in image editor

This lets you easily annotate screenshots

One of the things I want Windows Snipping Tool to improve is the editing options available within the app so that it’s easier to annotate a screenshot. If I want to pixelate sensitive information or add arrows, I need to open another image editor, but ShareX has its own built-in image editor.

This editor allows you to add arrows and shapes to your images and perform actions like cropping, adding text, and highlighting. You can even add a cursor to point to a specific element.

Even though it’s primarily a screen capture app, you can upload other images to edit on ShareX. I did this with a JPG image of my cat and could use beautifying effects like adding a gradient frame to the image.

You can record GIFs and videos

No need to use a separate app

While the Windows Snipping Tool can record your screen, it doesn’t have the ability to record GIFs (you need to use the Photos app to create a GIF). This wouldn’t be a problem for most people, but if you often write tutorials, a GIF is often preferable to an actual video due to its smaller file size.

ShareX gives you both options: you can capture a traditional screen recording or a GIF. The app also lets you tweak an impressive number of settings for capturing in these formats, including frame rate and encoding.

It supports a bunch of sharing options

I briefly mentioned the upload option in ShareX, but this feature also supports sharing your captures in a variety of ways. Once you have uploaded a file, you can left-click on the thumbnail to share it. By default, the image is uploaded to Imgur anonymously, and you’re not required to link an account. You can then share this URL to various social media sites such as Reddit, Facebook, X (Twitter), and others.

You can also choose to share the URL by email or send it to an image search engine. If you’ve chosen a cloud service like OneDrive as your upload destination, you can create a custom link using ShareX.

It’s packed with features

More than I can count

Whenever I think I’ve figured out everything ShareX can do, I am surprised by another feature or tool included in the app. In truth, the number of features can be a bit daunting at first. But as you become more familiar with the app and its features, you discover even more utility.

Besides the features I’ve already mentioned, there are other useful tools, like a screen color picker (which identifies the hex code of the color of a certain pixel on your screen), a ruler (which measures pixel height, width, and area), a video converter, an OCR tool, a QR code scanner, and a clipboard viewer.

While the Windows Snipping Tool has improved over the years and introduced useful features like OCR, it lags behind ShareX in many ways. If you’re looking for a more powerful tool for capturing screenshots and screen recordings, give ShareX a try.
