Review: Satechi’s Stand & Hub is the Mac Mini accessory everyone should have

USB hubs are probably some of the most basic accessories you can get design-wise because they’re usually designed to be used with any PC. The Satechi Stand & Hub for the M4 Mac Mini is different, and it’s made for one very specific device. That may limit its audience, but it’s also what makes this a nearly perfect accessory conceptually.

And even beyond the concept, the Satechi Stand & Hub is a brilliantly executed product. It looks and feels great and it improves the Mac Mini experience in basically every way it could. If you have an M4-based Mac Mini, especially the base model, you owe it to yourself to buy this accessory.

About this review: Satechi sent me the Stand & Hub for the purposes of this review. The company had no input in its content.

More ports, more storage

If you have an M4 Mac Mini, the Satechi Stand & Hub is an essential accessory to have. Not only does it add more ports, it fixes Apple’s bad design decision, and it gives you more storage, making this even more valuable for the base model.

Pros & Cons

  • Adds USB Type-A and an SD card reader to the Mac Mini
  • Fast SSD enclosure is perfect for base models with low internal storage
  • It fixes the power button placement
  • Design doesn’t lack in the Mac Mini in place
  • A little pricy

Pricing and availability

After announcing the latest Stand & Hub last year, Satechi launched this model in limited quantities on February 17th, 2025, with full availability planned for March. You can already find it on Satechi’s official website and Amazon.

The hub costs $99 on Stechi’s website, though the Amazon listing is currently showing it for $130.

The ports you need

USB Type-A still makes sense sometimes

I find that the Mac Mini has a fairly generous port selection for the small computer it is, but it’s very obvious that Apple still wants to go forward with USB-C as the standard for everything, which is how it should be. Unfortunately, a lot of accessory makers don’t seem to agree, and even a lot of premium products still use USB Type-A connections. For example, both my Lemokey P1 HE and Logitech MX Master 3S, which are fairly expensive in their own categories, come with USB Type-A dongles for wireless communication. And yes, I could use Bluetooth, sure, but Bluetooth is bad; if that wasn’t the case, these products wouldn’t come with a dongle included.

There just aren’t enough ports

So, to use my keyboard and mouse optimally, I needed USB Type-A ports. Then, the microphone I use for recording videos also uses a USB Type-A connector, and so does the headset I use while streaming. The ports are more than welcome here, even if I wish they weren’t necessary anymore.

The SD card reader is also extremely useful. I take a lot of photos for work, and the easiest way to bring them over is either using a USB cable or taking out the SD card and inserting it into the Mac Mini, which I generally prefer.

A nearly perfect design

It’s built for the Mac Mini

It also helps that this hub is designed to perfectly complement the Mac Mini in terms of looks. It has the exact same length and width, and the dished top makes it perfect for slotting the Mac Mini on top, giving the vents underneath the computer the room they need to breathe and keep it cool. Not that the fan is ever audible, but you still shouldn’t cover up the air intake on a computer, and this setup works perfectly. My wife pointed out that the color on the Stand & Hub is slightly different from the Mac Mini itself, and while I can see it, it’s an extremely subtle difference that I think most people won’t mind or even notice. The Mac Mini has an ever-so-slightly warmer tone to it.

Satechi Stand & Hub for Mac review: The perfect companion for Mac mini or Mac Studio

If you’re looking for a way to add expandable storage to your Mac mini or Mac Studio, this is the cleanest way to do it.

The Satechi Stand & Hub even fixes one of the biggest problems with the Mac Mini’s design: the power button. For some reason, Apple thought it was a good idea to put the power button under the computer, so to turn it on, you have to lift the computer slightly off the desk. The Stand & Hub has a large cutout on the back that gives your finger enough space to press the power button without having to move the Mac Mini, which is also really nice.

My main complaint here is that all of this still depends on the user to make sure everything is always lined up perfectly. There’s no locking mechanism or magnet to ensure that the hub and the Mac Mini are properly aligned and stay that way. A very small change in the position sometimes can completely ruin the symmetry of the design, so I would have liked to see something like this. It’s especially frustrating because inserting an SD card into the spring-loaded slot means you need some grip to push it in, but your natural instinct is to hold on to the top half of the Mac Mini, which will likely shift it from its position. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means, but you do need to train yourself to avoid these things.

The SSD slot is a gift

Don’t give Apple your money

Arguably the best part about this whole thing, though, is the SSD slot on the underside of the Stand & Hub. This is what makes it the perfect accessory for the Mac Mini in my eyes, especially if you buy the base model. You’ve probably heard before that the Mac Mini is one of the best deals in tech considering how much performance you get for just $600, but when you look at the storage, 256GB really isn’t a lot. And with Apple charging at least $200 for every upgrade, it becomes a much less compelling deal.

This accessory fixes that almost completely. There’s an SSD slot here that can house an M.2 SSD in any of the major form factors you know of (2230, 2242, or 2280). I bought a 1TB SSD for less than $70, whereas upgrading to 1TB from Apple would cost $400. Even if you add the cost of the Stand & Hub itself, you’re spending half the money, and you still have more storage since buying an external 1TB SSD still leaves you with 256GB of internal storage on top of that.

OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock review: Why aren’t all docks like this?

The OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock is a very rare docking station with a built-in power supply, and that alone makes it one of the best I’ve ever tried.

Essentially, this makes it way easier to justify buying the base model of the Mac Mini, or just opting for a lower storage tier while putting more money towards RAM if you want to. It really elevates the value proposition of the Mac Mini. And sure, external SSDs are a bit slower, but the Mac Mini’s SSD isn’t incredibly fast, either. Most people won’t notice a difference at all. I was moving files between the internal and external storage at speeds of 1GB/s, and it’s very hard to complain about that. There’s even a thermal pad included with the Stand & Hub to help keep your SSD cool if you need it.

Should you buy the Satechi Stand & Hub for the Mac Mini (M4)?

Simply put, yes. Whether it’s for the extra ports, the SSD expansion, or the more convenient access to the power button, the Satechi Stand & Hub checks all the right boxes for the perfect Mac Mini accessory. It only slightly increases the size of the computer, but it makes it so much more versatile and capable. Unless you just don’t need any of these things, or it’s really our of your budget, I don’t see a reason not to buy this accessory.

You should buy the Satech Stand & Hub for the Mac Mini (m4) if:

  • You have an M4 Mac Mini
  • You want more storage without paying absurd prices
  • You need USB Type-A ports or an SD card reader

You should NOT buy the Satechi Stand & Hub for the Mac Mini (M4) if:

  • You don’t need more ports or storage

Perfect pairing

Satechi Mac Mini M4 Stand & Hub

If you have an M4 Mac Mini, the Satechi Stand & Hub is probably the most important accessory you can buy for it. It gives you more ports and storage expansion, plus it fixes the Mac Mini’s biggest design flaw.
