OpenAI CEO Sam Altman champions a balanced hiring strategy – ET CIO

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman advocates for a hiring approach that prioritises talent over age, emphasising the importance of maintaining a diverse workforce that combines both experienced professionals and promising young talent.

Speaking on “The Twenty Minute VC (20VC)” podcast, Altman highlighted the value of blending different experience levels within tech companies.

“A strategy that says ‘I’m only going to hire younger people,’ or ‘I’m only going to hire older people,’ I believe, would be misguided,” Altman stated in the November 4 episode.

He emphasised that inexperience doesn’t necessarily equate to lack of value, suggesting companies should be willing to take chances on high-potential individuals early in their careers.

However, Altman acknowledged the need for balance, particularly when handling complex projects. He noted that while young talent can be valuable, he would hesitate to assign critical, high-stakes work like designing expensive systems to inexperienced employees.

This balanced hiring philosophy comes amid increasing polarisation in the tech job market. While companies engage in fierce competition for senior AI talent – exemplified by Google’s recent $2.7 billion deal with Character.ai and Microsoft’s $650 million agreement with Inflection – entry-level candidates face significant challenges.
