AI workers that can work together to arrive in 2025, says Capgemini – ET CIO

Artificial intelligence (AI) has come a long way from the simple chatbots of the past. Now, AI is developing into autonomous agents capable of performing tasks independently, marking a significant leap forward, with implications for nearly every industry. On similar lines, French IT company Capgemini has predicted the emergence of multi-agent AI systems by 2025. These systems will consist of multiple AI agents working together to solve complex problems.

It said that these AI agents will be independent entities capable of planning, learning, and executing tasks with minimal human oversight. They will collaborate to achieve common goals, much like human teams, thereby enabling more efficient problem-solving, increased productivity, and innovative solutions to complex challenges.

In a report titled, “Harnessing the value of generative AI” by the Capgemini Research Institute, the company talks about top use cases of AI across sectors.

“We define an AI agent as a technology designed to function independently, plan, reflect, pursue higher-level goals, and execute complex workflows with minimal or limited direct human oversight,” the company said in its report.

Similarly, a multi-agent system is a collection of these agents working together to solve tasks in a distributed and collaborative way.

“Such systems exhibit characteristics traditionally found exclusively in human operators, including decision-making, planning, collaboration, and adapting execution techniques based on inputs, predefined goals, and environmental considerations,” the company explained.

According to Pascal Brier, the company’s chief innovation officer, Capgemini is already “seeing companies that are discussing those agent technologies.” In an interview with CNBC, he added that applications using multiple autonomous agents “is really what we should expect next year.”

“As AI technology progresses, they will transition from the role of supportive tool to that of independent agent with full execution capability. Unlike conventional AI systems, as well as following instructions, these agents can understand, interpret, adapt, and act independently and, for certain tasks, are capable of replacing human workers,” it said in the report.
