IBM Closes Software AG Enterprise Tech Business Acquisition

Tech giant IBM has completed its acquisition of StreamSets and webMethods from Software AG as the company aims to enhance its already extensive software portfolio.

As businesses increasingly rely on AI-driven solutions, the need for seamless integration of applications, APIs and data across hybrid cloud environments has become vital. IBM’s decision to acquire StreamSets and webMethods is a direct response to this growing demand. With IDC projecting the creation of one billion new applications by 2028 – largely due to the rise of generative AI (Gen AI) – the ability to efficiently manage and integrate data has never been more critical.

Enhancing IBM’s AI and automation capabilities

First announced in December 2023, the acquisition worth €2.13bn follows a more than 20-year relationship between IBM and Software AG.

StreamSets brings to the table advanced data ingestion capabilities, which will be integrated into IBM’s AI and data platform, watsonx. This addition will enable real-time data ingestion from various sources, a crucial feature for organisations looking to harness the power of their data for AI applications.

WebMethods, meanwhile, contributes its Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) technology to IBM’s Automation solutions. This technology allows for flexible deployment of integrations, addressing the complexities of modern business environments and data sovereignty requirements.

The integration software market is projected to exceed US$18bn by 2027, according to IDC. By acquiring StreamSets and webMethods, which collectively serve over 1,500 companies globally, IBM is positioning itself to capture a significant share of this growing market.

The acquisition is expected to benefit IBM’s clients and partners by providing them with one of the most comprehensive application and data integration platforms in the industry. This will enable organisations to better manage the increasing complexity of their IT landscapes and prepare for the widespread adoption of AI technologies.
